Spring 2009

Today is the first day of Spring.  The ocean was calm with occasional waves turning over like blue pages.  This ginger caught my attention.  It's stalks are 12 ft tall, but the flowers are almost 3 ft off the ground.  It was hidden, by the wall, and from the distance they look like red torches.  Outside I hear king birds, and other birds, like jazz musicians.  I am grateful for this moment.
The Caribbean has its magical moments, and this flower is one of them.

Puerto Rico Birds: Frigates

They're called Magnificent Frigates and they patrol the waters in the Caribbean.  We often see them cruising in front of the villa.  One of the sexes has a red pouch underneath their neck.

Their wing span can reach about 8 feet.  They float in the air.  I've seen them pull large fish out the water and steal fish from sea gulls.

I don't think they nest anywhere around here.

They're beautiful, and I love watching them.  They're bad swimmers and walkers, but boy can they fly.  WikiPedia says they can fly for a week without landing.
