Rincon Puerto Rico

Harvest Moon Party

Saturday we went to the Harvest Moon Festival. Mario Jose donated the restaurant space and arranged the pig roast and extra help. The restaurant is right on the beach. Our table was almost in the sand. You could hear the surf washing ashore.
The roast pork smelled wonderful, but we opted for the vegetarian menu. It was the first time I'd been there. There are a couple of decks on the sand and they do weekly yoga.
It was a nice crowd, more than 120 visitors. We had a great time. There were many baked goodies for sale. I try keeping away from them, but my son bought brownies. Ouch- too many calories.

Rincon Puerto Rico | Saving Tres Palmas Marine Reserve

On Friday the 21st of November, the premiere of the film "Salva Tres Palmas" (Saving Tres Palmas) was shown to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the World Surfing Championship in Rincon. Surfrider organizers were hoping to get at least 200 persons, but over 300 showed up. There was standing room only.
This is a wonderful film and documents a community's effort to save an Elkhorn coral reef Forrest, threatened by trash and irresponsible construction. This film serves as a model for any community fighting to preserve their environment.
As a treat, the band scoring the film also performed. "Mijo de la Palma" is a fusion of traditional Puerto Rico rhythms, flamenco and blues. As of this posting I still can't find where I can get a copy of the video and a cd from the band.
Visit Tres Palmas Coral Project Blog. Volunteers are always needed.

Puerto Rico Vacation Rentals

Review

We get interesting visitors at the villa, and this past week we had a group of 8 gentlemen who had not visited Puerto Rico, since 1970.  They were having a college reunion.   These are professional guys, some retired, some still working, but all with the party of youth inside.
Cases and cases of empty bottles were piled against the wall.  At one point I heard them yodeling, and splashing in the water.
This is their note:
Villa Orleans Review
Greg told me, he was arrested the first day in Rincon.  He came to surf. He was in college, and on his first day he saw a yola (a large wooden row boat) and since it was on the beach, with oars, he thought it was public, so he took it for a spin, and this disturbed two angry fishermen, who called the police.

They were surprised at how much Rincon had grown.  They camped out on the beach in 1970. I don't think beach camping is allowed today.   I know we'll see them again, but this time with their families.

Marine Reserve Clean Up

In Rincon PR we went out to take garbage from the waters at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. My son and I volunteer for Surfrider. Captain Pauco took us out. Wess already had the coordinates of tires and other debris.
A cold front was scheduled to come through, so we were concerned. Already we could see breaking waves at Maria's Beach. The waters beneath us was still clear.
We tow boarded for a while, that is being pulled by the boat to scout our for more underwater trash. This allows you to search large areas.
Afterwards we went to specific areas to pull trash.
Toward mid day we found one particular area where I saw way over hundreds of beer cans and plastic. The water was about 20 ft deep, too deep to snorkel. Wess said, 6 divers with two tanks a piece couldn't dent the amount of trash in this trench. Wess and Kate brought up enough cans to fill a very large garbage bag. The water was too cloudy for good pictures.

Rincon Beach Wedding

Roberto married Christina, our wedding at Villa Orleans. Our friends helped out big time. Lisa from Tres Sirenas did H'orderves. Yari from Taino Divers did music. Todd from the Lemon Tree married Roberto and Christina. It's nice having a boat captain as a friend. Nichol catered the wedding, and the food was most excellent.
Villa Orleans is now doing weddings, check out our Rincon PR Beach weddings page.
